Predatory journals: how their publishers operate and how to avoid them
Jiří Kratochvíl, Lukáš Plch

Authors who publish in scientific or scholarly journals today face the risk of publishing in so-called predatory journals. These journals exploit the noble idea of the Open Access movement, whose goal is to make the latest scientific findings available for free. Predatory journals, unlike the reputable ones working on an Open Access basis, neglect the review process and publish low-quality submissions. The basic attributes of predatory journals are a very quick review process or even none at all, failure to be transparent about author fees for publishing an article, misleading potential authors by imitating the names of well-established journals, and...

Introduction:Despite great recent progress, familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is still underestimated, under-diagnosed and thus undertreated worldwide. We have very little information on exact prevalence of patients with FH in the Central, Eastern and Southern Europe (CESE) region. The aim of the study was to describe the epidemiological situation in the CESE region from data available. Methods:All local leaders of the ScreenPro FH project were asked to provide local data on (a) expert guess of FH prevalence (b) the medical facilities focused on FH already in place (c) the diagnostic criteria used (d) the number of patients...

Introduction:Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is related to a high risk of stroke. The main role in etiopathogenesis is played by the left atrial appendage (LAA). As many as 95 % of thrombi in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation are located in the appendage. Prevention of stroke then consists in permanent anticoagulation which, however, has its limits and risks. An alternative method is the left atrial appendage occlusion. In our report, we would like to present a new possibility of the closure using the epicardial system AtriClip (AtriCure). Methodology:In the period beginning in July 2012 - September 2015 we performed LAA closure...

Introduction:Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is one of the main causes of chronic liver disease worldwide. Aims:Retrospectively evaluate the results of therapy of patients with genotype 2 HCV treated during last 15 years at the Department of Infectious Diseases University Hospital Brno and Faculty of Medicine Masaryk University Brno, Czech Republic. Patients and methods:15 patients (9 men, 6 women, mean age 54.73 ± 13.83 years, median 54 years) with chronic genotype 2 infection were treated at in our department during last 15 years. It is the biggest group of patients with this diagnosis treated in...

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic disorder with well-known genetic transmission and clinical course. Despite great recent progress, FH is still underestimated, under-diagnosed and thus undertreated. Furthermore it represents a significant healthcare challenge as a common risk factor for the premature development of coronary heart disease. The ScreenPro FH Project is an international network project aiming at improving complex care - from timely screening, through diagnosis to up-to-date treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia in Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. An important task for the project is to harmonise and unify diagnostic...

Sclerosing cholangitides represent a group of chronic biliary obstructive diseases which include primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), IgG4 associated sclerosing cholangitis (IgG4-SC) and secondary sclerosing cholangitis (SSC). The manifestations of the diseases are similar, but their asymptomatic course is also frequent. IgG4-SC belongs to the group of IgG4 associated diseases and it is the most frequently related to type 1 autoimmune pancreatitis. Diagnosing of IgG4-SC is based on typical histopathological images, shape changes revealed by diagnostic imaging, serological tests, concurrent impairment of other organs and response to therapy, where...

Chronic Heart Failure (CHF) is accompanied by a whole range of symptoms, which significantly decrease the quality of life; these typically concern dyspnoea, fatigue and exercise intolerance. The objectification of the patient's condition but must have an effective means of evaluation. One such resource is cardiopolmonary exercise (CPX) testing with it is functional parameters. CPX test with its functional parameters is one of such means. VO2peak is undoubtebly the parameter, which was used the most often in the past 25 years, however, it has many limitations. It is reason, why the evaluation of ventilation effectiveness using the VE/VCO2...

The definition "Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy" (PML) was first used in 1958 to describe a fatal demyelinating central nervous system (CNS) disease in patients with lymphoproliferative disorders. In 1971, the virus responsible for the disease was isolated and named John Cunningham virus (JCV). We present a rare case of a 62-year-old male with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and PML. In our work, we discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and offer suggestions for preventing PML development. The main learning points are: 1. Regularly check the level of immunoglobulins and the CD4+ : CD8+ T-cell ratio, intravenous...
